Tybee Island-a barrier island about 18 miles from Savannah Georgia is a great Spring Destination or weekend escape!
Tyee Island has played a role in history since 1520 when a Spanish explorer laid claim to along with other islands making “La Florida
Pirates used Tybee frequently to hide treasures and restock.
Now you can “Hide-and restock”-relax, enjoy the beautiful beaches, eat and rejuvenate!
If driving over for a day trip- stop at the lighthouse-www.tybeelighthouse.org- you can climb the 178 steps to the top or just tour the grounds. The lighthouse was originally built in 1736 and I believe this final brick one has a date of 1916. They are continually maintaining it and I find it one of America’s most beautiful lighthouses!
After that maybe rent some bikes www.fattirebikestybee.com and tour around the island to the more secluded North Beach-officers row with some beautiful homes-bird point and just enjoy catching a breeze on a bike!
Lunch -where else but the Crab Shack! The motto here is “where the elite eat in their bare feet!” The Crab Shack www.thecrabshack.com has had a history of being a place to park your boat, gather supplies and cook your spoils.. blue crabs, and plenty of shrimp.. the öfficial restaurant”started evolving in the 80’s and has grown since then but I feel still has that casual pull up a chair grab some shrimp and relax, laugh, take a break or watch the sunset!
Being an Artist I can’t help feel the pull of the Islands creative spirits… many artists live here including Douglas Jones Fish Art Gallery-a great place full of his “fish themed art”from recycled guitars, metal fish to shells, sea glass and mannequins! Fish Art Gallery- you can’t miss it at 1207 US Hwy 80, Tybee. You can’t miss it !!
If you decide to sleep by the sea.. Tybee Island has many wonderful small inns, and b and b;s including Mermaid Cottage rentals which also rents Paula Deen’s Cottage to sleep in.. personally I think any of the small bed and breakfasts would be an incredible stay and many are about a block from the Beach!
well…enjoy the sun.. catch some sand.. and rejuvenate.. all on Tybee Island !
