Photography Tips-Dull Sky-Finding subjects-Urban Photography!

Fall and Spring keeps Landscape Photographers hopping- dashing here and there chasing Fall color, Spring color, wildflowers-leaves etc.. but what about the other two seasons Summer and winter?
Well living in California-unless you head to landscapes with snow or dramatic skies- you start looking at the Urban Landscape-signs-buildings-man-made things…
Winter- when the leaves have fallen is a great time to see the bones of a building or the interesting old neon hanging around.
When photographing a landscape- we tend to get the BIG picture take in the sky, the trees and then maybe start trying to find images within that- a single tree- or a line of a leaf against the sky- same is true with Urban Landscapes.
Start with an image of the WHOLE- such as in the case of a sign- all the words-the sign and the building and so on. From there start to single in on detail- in this case how the light is hitting the sign or just the angle of the arrow to the word vacancy.
And when the sky is flat as in this particular day- cropping to just what is interesting is important- take several images- walk around and see both sides of the sign if you can- zoom in and out. Also, as I always mention it is good to go with a buddy- sometimes the best Urban landscapes are in areas that are a bit run-down. Take a friend and help watch each other- cars- stepping out in the street is sometimes the best place to take the photograph.
